Swine Flu Confirmed In Potter County
JUNE 23, 2009

The first confirmed case of Influenza A (H1N1) in Potter County has been reported by the Department of Health.

The patient was tested at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and has recovered at home. CCMH will continue its efforts to protect patients and staff. Anyone visiting the hospital should inform a staff member immediately if they exhibit flu-like symptoms. While CCMH has been preparing for the potential of a flu pandemic for quite some time, the hospital is following recommendations from local emergency management officials, the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization.

We encourage people to remain calm and take time to learn about this virus, especially what you should do if you have symptoms,” said John Hetrick, director, Potter County Department of Emergency Services.

Symptoms of swine flu are similar to the seasonal flu and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, and coughing. While there is currently no vaccine available, the swine flu can be treated with certain antiviral drugs. Call your medical provider if you think you have the flu.

Steps people can take to avoid spreading the flu include:

·stay home if you are sick

·cough/sneeze into the arm/elbow or a tissue and rewash hands

·wash hands frequently with warm soap/water or use an antibacterial gel

·wash hands before touching eyes, nose, mouth

·drink plenty of fluids

·eat a balanced diet

·get plenty of rest and exercise

CCMH has established a Swine Flu informational hotline. The prerecorded message can be heard by calling 814/260-5279 or toll free at 877/364-7904. As the status of this situation changes, the message will be updated as needed.

Coudersport, PA – Today, the Potter County DES Office began a month-long campaign to help Americans of all ages recognize the importance of 9-1-1 and the role they play in ensuring effective and efficient emergency response in times of crisis.

Groups including the United States Congress and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), a leading public safety association, have also recognized April as National 9-1-1 Education Month, and are encouraging the media, the 9-1-1 community, the wireless industry, and public information providers to engage in 9-1-1 awareness and education activities this month.

“For forty years, 9-1-1 has served as the vital link between the American public and emergency services,” said NENA CEO, Brian Fontes. “Public education and awareness initiatives throughout the years have contributed in large measure to the incredible and ongoing success of the emergency communications system as a whole.

It is our hope that all groups interested in promoting and enhancing the safety and welfare of the public will help deliver critical
9-1-1messages this month.”

Department of Emergency Services Relocating
Potter County Department of Emergency Services will be moving on Friday January 9th— right down the street. Operations are relocating about 75 yards to a more spacious county-owned building that was formerly used as a mental retardation group home. It’s located at the Maple View property near Ladona.

More than $300,000 in renovations have been completed under the direction of the general contractor, Hamilton Construction. The new office complex will house the Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Operations Center and an enhanced 9-1-1 communications center. The center is capable of fielding land-line or wireless telephone calls from both Potter and Tioga counties and dispatching emergency responders in either county. Computers will allow for the direction and tracking of emergency responders such as firefighters, ambulance services, police, the Pa.  Bureau of Forestry and others.

Backup electrical power is available, as are overnight accommodations and other provisions for emergency services personnel.

Potter County’s project moved forward in conjunction with the Tioga County Board of Commissioners and the Pa. Emergency Management Agency.

Comm Trailer Pressed into Service a Lyman Run Incident

Although not yet "officially" in service yet the, Potter County's new communications/command trailer was pressed into service on June 10th for an incident at Lyman Run State Park near Galeton. A drowning at the lake launched a multi-agency response that would ultimately involve agencies from three counties. Among the agencies responding to the incident were Galeton Fire Dept., Gale Hose Ambulance, Harrison Twp. Fire Co. Dive Team, McKean County Dive Team, Wellsboro Fire Dept. Dive Team, Mansfield Fire Dept. (mobile compressor), PSP, PSP Air Unit, DCNR and the Potter County Coroner's office.

The trailer was located near the scene to provide a location for command personnel to meet as well as to provide for resources for the command team. Both remote video cameras were put into use as was the satellite internet system which allowed for access to up to date weather information. The unit proved to be a great asset to the operations. Photos from the incident can be found in our photo gallery area.
